Outdoor Camera recording every 3 minutes at night

There is a known issue where at night, the Outdoor Camera's motion sensor may and initiate recordings repeatedly, without any confirmed (ongoing) triggers.

Outdoor Camera Firmware Update 1.10.x has been rolling out, and it includes some fixes that may resolve this issue. You can check if your camera is already updated by going into the Camera Settings section of the SimpliSafe app.

If you are still experiencing this issue after your camera has auto-updated, please let us know here.

Our engineering team has identified a similar issue with a different underlying cause, which has surfaced in versions 1.18 and 1.20. You can follow updates for that issue here.

I have five outdoor cameras all installed in 2023.  All are powered by AC power from the house.  All running 1.20.32 firmware.  One camera started exhibiting this behavior in late December 2023 and continues each night as of this report.  Does not do this during the daylight hours.  A second camera also exhibited this but stopped when I reduced sensitivity to low, people only.  Right now all cams are on Low sensitivity, people only.   Spotlight on or off does not seem to change the behavior.   Until this event started, all 5 cams worked quite well.  I did have them on medium sensitivity, people only until this started.

Please advise recommended resolution.  thanks

I have done all of what they say to do.  Still does the same thing.   Mine is hard-wired to AC, or else it would have been dead by now:  Every 2 or 3 minutes.  I removed the camera.  SimpliSafe, I am paying for this service that isn’t working.   And you thought it would be a good thing to raise your prices last year for the monitoring.  What are you going to do for me and all others?   This is ridiculous.

I rebooted the offending cam.  Same behavior last night.  Starts around midnight and runs until daybreak.  Does not happen at dusk or dark until midnight.  Then it goes off ever couple minutes more or less.

I don’t know why you all keep thinking that there will be a firmware update coming soon for this problem. This has been going on for the two years since my cameras starting having this 2/3  minute problem. And during all those two years SS have responded by repeatedly saying their engineers are aware of the problem and it will be fixed in an upcoming (or next) firmware update.

Learn from the past!!!!!

There is a great deal of myth and legend about these “security” cameras, most of it sourcing from the… source.  “People only?,” then why do I have countless videos of passing cars, and/or my dogs running in my back yard, with no people anywhere?  “High sensitivity?,” then why are all of the passing car videos starting at mid-frame, not as the cars enter the frame, and why are the few videos of people showing only their backs, after they’ve passed the camera?  My driveway is a steep hill, so no one is running up to the camera, and a person walks 80’ up that hill, directly toward a camera, before it can capture their backside.  3 of my 4 cameras have updated from 1.18 to 1.20 in the last week or so.  One camera reported it was offline, but then sent me a motion detection alert in the app, while it said it was offline.  Irony?  I had to remove and replace the battery twice (2 minutes out both times) to get it to stay online.  Then there’re the “handshaking” messages as you wait for it to show a live view - “Waking up the camera… Connecting… Launching Live View…” all while the camera is offline, before and after the attempt.  BS, SS.  That 4 letter company’s cameras are starting to look very appealing.

Ok, I wanted to start a new thread on this issue because it's not exactly the same as the 3 minute issue. The Web form requires a "topic" and no matter what I enter when I hit enter it blanks out and says "hold on" this field is required. So, that needs to be fixed or clarified.

Now to what I had been trying to post:

For the first time ever I've noticed two tiny red LED lights lit on the front of my outdoor camera. I can't find anywhere to tell me what these two lights are. Where can I find that information? How do I turn them off? In the app the "status light" is set to off and has been since first installing sometime last year.

Is this somehow related to the issue where the camera is no longer obeying settings such as motion sensing people versus everything and also recording/notifying when there is no real activity?

Thanks in advance.

Same cam, same behavior last night.  Began at 11:48 pm and went all night until 6:17 am when light just started to come up.

At least it's consistently poor performance.

The status light is a blue flashing light that flashes every couple seconds.  The two red lights are the IR night vision lights.  You can't turn them off unless you don't want to see anything at night.

I have the spotlight turned on, the camera is on external power. For some time now the spotlight is delayed coming on. I assumed the delay might be connected to the other issues from the recent release. Should the IR lights be on even with spotlight enabled? How about before the motion sensor is triggered? Granted I wouldn’t notice the ir lights with the spotlight on but I don’t think I’ve seen them on before when the motion sensor and spotlight had not been triggered yet.

Bad cam started last night at 10 pm and went all night again until 6:25 am when daylight came up.

My camera is updated to version 1.18.x and is still having this issue. Is there another fix?

Hi @renichols93 ,

This specific issue has been resolved. But a different one with similar symptoms has popped up in version 1.18. You can read about it here.

All 5 of my cams were running 1.20.X firmware but I see they are now running a 1.18.23.5603 version as of yesterday.  Last night was the first night my bad cam did not attempt to go crazy every couple minutes.   It showed ZERO bad behavior.   So we went from a 1.20 release to backward 1.18 version?   OK I guess if it stopped the cams from acting up.

1.118 has this issue as well.  SimpliSafe seems to have bigger issues as my camera was on 1.20 before I reset and rejoined and it reverted to 1.18.   That was the version for weeks until last week when it was on 1.20 again but this week it’s back to 1.18.   So either SimpliSafe is experimenting upon us all to see if the version differ and how or and more likely, they have lost synchronization between their mirrored distribution servers so which version you have would be dependent upon which server your system last checked in with.

sounds like their IT department needs some controls review.

Simple answer - No!  This has been a problem for 2 years and for two years SS have been saying a firmware update is coming!!!

Here is a link to another thread for this problem showing the recording every 3 minutes problem dating back 2 years:

@carvermon this one is. A different issue, with a different underlying cause but similar symptoms, is currently in progress of resolution.

Well whatever the 1.18 firmware version that was pushed to my cams did, it stopped the behavior.  Time will tell.

Second night in a row that cam has acted normal.  No continued false alarms all night long.

Are you running 1.18.23.5603?

I also note the overall response to detected  movement better than on 1.20.

Another full night with zero defective behavior.  since rollback to the 1.18 fw, I have had good performance like when I installed them.

3 of my 4 cameras were “updated” to v1.20 a week or so ago, but now all 4 have rolled back to v1.18.23.5603.  All 4 were running v1.18.23.5603 when the one camera was false triggering all night, every night, and only at night.  As noted previously in this thread and others, SS provided me with a replacement camera after 3 calls to tech support, various resets, removal from my account, reinstallation, and false triggering even when motion detection was off.  The new camera has been mostly trouble free, as long as I keep my (very bright) floodlights off.  The floodlights are LED, mounted about 10’ above the camera on the same corner of the house.  When the floodlights are on, I get false triggering every 3 minutes, which stops shortly after I turn the floodlights off.  So, we turn off motion sensing when we turn the lights on.  Not a great solution, but it mostly works.
