Doorbell video records upon ring but not upon approach

If I get a Doorbell notification (video starts upon doorbell ring)...shouldn't the approaching motion set off the recorder before the person makes it to my door and rings the doorbell? In other words, I have video of the UPS driver ringing my doorbell and walking away, but no video of him approaching with a package, prior to ringing the doorbell! Theoretically, I have no way to prove that he actually brought a package to my door.

Is this the way it's supposed to work?

Do you have motion detection on?

You need to go into the camera settings to set up.  Be sure to save your changes.

Yes, I do have motion detection on...it works fine. However, in the particular case I described, I got a recording upon doorbell press, and saw the delivery driver at the door and walking away, but no video of the approach.

Too bad this forum is not searchable. There are many similar complaints. I have experienced the same issue even with the sensitivity set at high.

It's searchable, just not built in.  People seem to have decent results using Google with the ":site" keyword

@Pmcmil5450 , this applies definitely for the Android version, not sure on iOS. Go into your phone app, go to camera settings, video doorbell. Tap motion sensitivity and then zone settings. Make sure that your camera's field of vision is not selected to exclude those zones from detecting motion.

Please post your outcome here.

The iOS app doesn't have a setting for zones...nor, for that matter, is there a zone setting when accessing settings online. In any event,
the motion sensor does detect and record in that field of vision (from driveway coming up walkway to front stoop/door).

I did go back and look at doorbell ring videos...none of them show the approach...the video starts recording upon doorbell ring. It's as if the doorbell ring overrides any motion detection leading up to the doorbell being rung.

I don't know if that's intentional, but it appears to be how it's working.

I feel it's a flaw that should be corrected. If you can't see a delivery person approaching with a package because the video starts only at doorbell ring, there is no proof the package was delivered. Also, if anyone approaches and rings the doorbell, there is considerably less time of video recording which could identify the person...with the doorbell ring video, you get a short look at the face, and then most of the recording is of them from the back...walking away!

@Pmcmil5450 thanks for confirming iOS hasn't been updated yet as it appears SS is having challenges updating the app. I should tell you there are 3 things I don't like for sure (Apple, ADT and Notre Dame) so being a Windows and Android user I don't have a horse in that race.

I can say that the Android version, with the day/night separate settings and zone feature combines to make the doorbell camera work very, very well.

Simplisafe: can you provide an ETA when the iOS version of the SS phone app will be released?

Interesting that this feature...which you have on Android...is NOT an option when accessing your SimpliSafe account in a browser!

I would like to see SimpliSafe correct the recording function so that you get the motion detection recording, and then the doorbell ring recording.

The iOS version has been working for at least several weeks now.

@michael.fernandes  thanks for posting this information! Now only if SS would keep all of this information on version and release details in one place in a CRC, we would all benefit, customers and SS alike.

Respectfully...none of this has anything to do with the issue I posted about!

My range, motion detection, zones...all working fine. I get great HD video...my question/issue is whether it is functioning the way it is supposed to. I get video upon approach to my front stoop/door, except when the doorbell is rung...then I only get video from the moment the doorbell is rung, as if any motion-detected video is overridden by doorbell video.

Can anyone else check to see if that's what you are seeing as well?

And to SimpliSafe: if this is operating the way you intend, please consider changing, so that all video from the time a person enters the zone/range through ringing the doorbell and leaving, is recorded.

*EDITED TO ADD: I just had a delivery person ring the bell...I have 2 videos this time...one from the motion detection, and activated by the doorbell. Guess it's not consistent!

I can confirm that the doorbell camera should pick up both motion and the ringing of doorbell.

The only thing I could suggest is the angle of the doorbell.  I know with my Arlo cameras, motion detection works best if the object approaches a but from the side verses straight on.  So you might see if you can change the doorbell angle.  You could use the included wedge to angle it up or down.  that might help some.  Or you could purchase a left/right plate from Amazon.  Most of the Ring or generic ones might will work.

These are just some suggestions.   Mine is mounted perpendicular to my door and I have the wedge installed pointing it down.  It has mostly worked well.

Video doorbell stopped recording motion. If I ring the doorbell it records but giving alerts and doesn't recording motion. I have had at least 10 motion events very near my front door since early morning but doorbell no alerting or recording. I have checked all settings, have all updates installed, etc. it worked fine until early this morning.
