Doorbell camera not detecting motion on sunny days

Got the doorbell camera a few weeks ago.  And I have noticed on sunny days the doorbell camera doesn't detect motion.  Anyone else running into similar issues and come up with a solution?  Seems silly a nice day is enough to defeat the motion detector...

More concerning is I was just about to order some outdoor cameras, but if nice weather is enough to defeat a Simplisafe camera, it's difficult to see expanding the system.

Hi Harvie!

That is unusual. Do you observe this issue at particular times of day? Like say, when the sun is directly shining on the camera, maybe causing glare (so there's not enough in the image for the the smart detection to identify an object?).

If you're comfortable with sharing your camera's view as a screenshot here, that might be helpful too.

@davey_d  My home faces south, on sunny days around midday, the motion detection doesn't seem to function.  The camera will turn on and work normally when the doorbell is rung, and I can see live picture fine from the camera while the motion detecting isn't working.  I have noticed it is pointed in the general direction of the sun during the times it seems to not work.    Early day and later in the day it will work normally again.

Ah, then I might be on the right track with direct sunlight maybe confusing the motion sensor. It does use passive infrared, which means it's looking out for sources of heat moving around in the field of view. So with so much heat coming at it, that might be causing trouble.

Just as an experiment, would you be comfortable with changing the angle of the camera? I can send you a Wedge Kit, which can turn it 15 degrees left or right, and that might help.

@HarvieJ I have the doorbell cam (since released) and two outdoor cams.  All work as advertised, and well. (Will get to the outdoor cam after the doorbell.) My house faces due West and therefore gets the afternoon sun. Image is crisp, well lit and no issues. Motions works too.  Before calling support, I would definitely do a connection check in the app, and make sure the signal strength is solid and meets min specs. If it does, I would call support and troubleshoot as they may have to replace it under warranty.

As far as the outdoor camera, recommend you definitely plan on a power source rather than the battery, whether that be the AC adapter or solar panel.  The battery is okay, but living in the Chicagoland area there is no way the battery will last long enough.  The AC adapter is very well built (like a brick....) and easy to install right under the gutters. Software has improved since release and happy with the performance. Again, have one outdoor cam facing due east in the back, one on front of the house facing due west, no issues. (but with secondary power source.)

If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a private chat note.

Please post your outcome on your db here if you get the chance. Thanks!
