Camera in garage doesn't detect garage door opening for package delivery

I have Amazon package delivery to my garage and I get alerts from my MyQ opener when they show up, however the camera I put in there is not triggering to capture any video of the delivery which is annoying - that's really the only reason I put one there.

I've set the privacy shutter to be open in all modes, tried Auto and always one for IR mode, and set the sensitivity to high.  Still no joy.  But if I walk into the garage from the door to the house it does trigger.

The garage is usually pretty dark - only one shaded window - I'm assuming that when the garage door opens there's a new big bright rectangle of light and it fails to notice someone standing there or moving.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?  If I put a motion sensor in there too would have force recording of video during the event?

@s13n  the simplicam built in motion sensor is very limited in my experience, and in my testing, is only about 10 feet out max and you must be directly in front of it. Solution: Where I have all of my simplicams I also have a separate motion sensor. Works like a charm. While I don't have a camera in my garage, I do have a motion sensor and two entry sensors mounted on the garage doors. All have easily withstood temperatures from almost 100 to a low of single digits and work fine. Try it and post your outcome here.

Thanks for sharing your experience to better guide my solution.

It's disappointing given how much better other brand's cameras do that aren't any more expensive - now I have to spend $45 more ($15 entry + $30 motion sensor) in this room to secure it.

I've come to realize that SimpliSafe cameras are only there for verification by owners and the monitoring people when another sensor triggers - that wasn't really clear to me until recently.

@s13n to try and put this in a lemonade situation, instead of lemons, I should note that the entry sensors on the garage doors are not necessary for the system to get a secret alert and start recording on the camera.  The motion detector set to secret alert only will do this in all instances.  I mentioned the garage door sensors because I actually use them to set off the alarm in home mode if in fact someone is successful in getting  one of the doors open.  Further SimpliSafe is having a national security month sale with both of these sensors are 40% off so it will lessen the financial impact with the discount and if you only buy the motion sensor.  Please note I am not a disagreeing with your comments but again attempting to make the best of this situation.

Hey SimpliSafe, since we're on the subject of garages please make sure to come out with an official garage door sensor and the corresponding software upgrade to support it as soon as possible

  Thanks!

You say that the camera triggers when you walk in front of it, just not the garage door opening.

As I understand it, the indoor cams are really only meant to trigger for human motion and works by detecting heat changes. So the garage door opening has no effect on it. So this is working as designed.

I too have an indoor camera mounted in my garage and my solution was to add an entry sensor to the garage door and set it to secret alert.  Bam, instant camera recording when the garage opens. SimpliSafe doesn't recommended using the entry sensors for this purposes I don't think but it works fine in my experience.

Anyway something to consider and would only cost 15 dollars extra to do.

@Postman77 Sorry for the confusion. In my instance, I originally only had the motion sensor there. The garage door entry sensors were a much later add, and I left the motion sensor in the spirit of "layers of security" doctrine.  Another example: I have motion sensors in every room on the first floor, but also glass break sensors in 3.  Your point is valid but I have added more "layers" over time, including entry sensors in 3 closets and 4 drawers scattered throughout the house.

@Postman77 - But doesn't the secret alert trigger recording on ALL cameras or is there some way to only trigger recording on a single camera.
