Gen 2 Motion Sensors Randomly Stop Working

I have two gen 2 motion sensors that randomly stop sensing motion. There is no lost connection notice or low battery errors, so I don't notice the issue until I happen to forget to turn off away mode and notice nothing happening when I pass a motion sensor. The sensors are installed and set up properly and work fairly well until they randomly stop working. I have a small townhouse and both sensors are on the same floor as the base station. This has happened at least 3 times over several months. I called Simplisafe to trouble the first time and found out that removing and replacing the battery resolves the issue, but that is not an acceptable solution, because I have no idea how long the motion sensors have stopped working before I notice they are not working. When I spoke to support today, they said they will send replacement sensors, but it seems like a software issue, so I expect the issue to continue with the new sensors. I never had this issue with the original SimpliSafe system.

Hi there, I just came here to say exactly the same!  I have the same problem with all three of my gen 2 sensors.

Interestingly I noticed this last night, as the alarm was set and I came downstairs and it didn't detect me.  I then put the system into test mode and walked the house, none of the sensors detected any motion, yet if you click the button on the sensor it does report into the base unit (but didn't fix the issue).  Only way to resolve was to remove the battery on each one.

Simplisafe - please fix this as the system is potentially disabled when this happens and you don't realise it.

Good to know I'm not the only one! I couldn't find any similar complaints online. The first time it happened, I think it was not long after a system update, so I thought it may have been related to the update. I don't think there was any recent updates this time. I have had a few power outages recently, so maybe that could be related. I am going to try to remember to check the motion sensors the next time the power goes out.

Hi @keelyc84 and @mistersimes ,

Thanks for reporting. We're definitely interested to see how those replacement units help.

I've also reported your cases to our escalation team. We'll be looking into the issue thoroughly.

All three of my sensors have stopped detecting motion again this morning, but if I put the system in test mode and press the test button on each device they report in. They just don’t detect any motion. I can walk up to the sensor and cover it with my hand, no detection.

Simplisafe support contacted me off the back of this post (which was very good customer service).  They spent half an hour checking the system over and doing some tests with me, but couldn't find the root cause.  I was able to demonstrate the problem to them, as the sensors weren't working when they called.

They've now sent me three replacement motion sensors and will monitor the situation.

Pleased with the support given so far.

@mistersimes How did you test to know that the Gen2 motion sensor was not working at that particular time?

I always arm the alarm at night, so when I come downstairs in the morning the hallway sensor normally detects me and starts the disarm countdown.  When the sensors 'crash' it doesn't detect me, that's how I can tell there's a problem.  I usually then put the system in test mode and do a walk test and find that all the sensors have stopped detecting motion.

@mistersimes SimpliSafe contacted me as well. Glad to know they are working on it! I also have a glass break sensor and don't really have a way to know if it is being impacted by the same issue since I'm not going around breaking glass on a regular basis, so I went ahead and took the batteries out of that sensor and put them back in.
