Gen 2 Motion Sensors Randomly Stop Working Without Notice

In August 2024, I created a post about how my gen 2 motion sensors would randomly stop working without notice, but it appears that SimpliSafe has hidden that post. The motion sensors show as being online, and I do not receive any error messages when they randomly stop sensing motion. They are installed properly and work fine until they randomly stop working. I only notice they are not working if I happen to forget to deactive away mode and walk past a motion sensor and nothing happens. Removing and replacing the battery resolves the issue temporaritly, but this is not an acceptable solution, because you have no way of knowing when they stop working. Simplisafe provided replacement sensors when the issue was originally reported, but the issue clearly has not been fixed, because it it happening again with one of the replacement sensors.

@keelyc84 We see that you have already gotten in touch with our Support team regarding this, and they have escalated your case to our tech team. A member of the team should be in touch soon to investigate further.

Support was not able to provide any assistance. It's been almost a year now since I originally reported the issue, and it does not appear that SimpliSafe is doing anything to resolve the issue.

I have a Gen 3 unfortunately, 😉 I disabled my two motion sensors. They're PIR sensors and detect heat. Or are supposed to.

Honestly, I've had little trouble with their RF sensors, it their junk cameras that caused my bad vibes for Simplisafe.

I don't want a fly or something landing on one armed away and setting off the alarm.

Might be rare, but false alarms are a nusience.

My actual real security system allows my Zigbee motion sensors to be sorta put in series (wrielessly) lol, and requires at least two be tripped to set off my home brewed alarm sirens within one minute. And they work 100%. Grouped and zone sensors.

I use them for lights & other automations.

I'm not sure they even support gen 2 much anymore.

The RF in your sensors or base could be getting weak. There is a hack online for adding a short wire by soldering it to the RF antenna in the motion sensor to strengthen the RF signal.

The base probably can't be fixed if thats the culprit.

I am having exactly the same problem. Post if you reach a solution.

@dougweldon What happens if you power cycle your Motion Sensor? You can do this by taking the following steps:

  1. Slide the Motion Sensor up and off its bracket
  2. Remove the battery from the device and wait 10 seconds
  3. After 10 seconds have passed, put the battery back into the device and place it back on its bracket

Thanks that works, but how will I know when one of the motion sensors drops out again? There is no indication of that in the app.

@simplisafe_admin I've done that at least 7 times now & it works for a little while & then randomly stops again (and not all at the same time).

I have 3 motion sensors and they all do the same exact thing.  Plus my silent notifications stopped working.

@simplisafe_admin I noticed today that this happened again with both of my motion sensors. It has now been over a year since I originally reported the issue. What is SimpliSafe doing to fix the issue?

This is happening to me and i have new generation sensors. Today is October 26, 2025.  So they're not fixing it apparently!!!

I've got 5 new generation sensors. Mine have done it too. I've had this system for about 60 days. Today's October 26, 2025. This is messed up!!!!!

To ensure optimal performance of your sensor, we recommend updating your Base Station firmware to 2.21.4.6. You can manually run an update by using the SimpliSafe® Mobile App and navigating to My System > Base Station Settings > Firmware and tapping on Update Available.
If your system is already on this firmware version, please remove and re-add the sensors. We expect the issue not to return on this firmware version.

I'm also having this problem and I am running the latest firmware version 2.23.0.1

New batteries, signal strength his high. The problem is everything shows its running ok but some of sensors do not trigger the alarm. I have 8 sensors and 4 are not triggering. You think the alarm is working but its actually not, with no indication. I can no longer recommend this alarm as looking deeper into the problem its a very comment issue that been ongoing for some time with no fix in place. The worrying bit is some people wont even know they have this issue.

I have tried all removing devices and reinstalling works for a little while but the issue reappears, one sensor is only 2 meters from the base station. If no fix is found it maybe time to remove this system and class it as a bad purchase.

@ur2insecure I just read your post and placed my system in test mode, turned on the base voice alerts and walked through my 1st floor. 3 original and 3 series 2 motion sensors and all worked. Exited test mode, placed in home mode (my first floor motions are set to instant trigger, alarm the new motions worked fine.

Question: how high on the walls are the motions placed? Thanks

My sensors are approximately 6ft high.

@ur2insecure That is within the recommended height and normal range for the covered field.   Next question, are you actually arming the system to test or using test mode? If arming, all motions need a few minutes to map the area for objects and temp to use as a base line for monitoring the area.  If you are using test mode, if you had voice set to off, then you would not hear the test announcement for any of the motion sensors, not just on the newer series 2.

What is puzzling is yours' do not work after a while and mine have been dependable. If not done already, suggest you contact support and see what they say.

SS, is there a ticket in on this as a known issue?

It when the system is  armed same issue when testing. I have removed sensor from system. Repaired them work fine for a while then problem reappear even though system can see the sensors. Battery is good signal is strong.

Scenario 1:

Can set home alarm, go to bed come down in the morning the sensor in the hallway does not trigger, I walk around the lounge that does not trigger then walk into another room like the utility it triggers.

Scenario 2:

I have two entry points front door and garage.

Open garage door the sensor does not trigger but then alarm get triggered by another sensor.

I need to call and see what they say.

Thanks for your replies.
