Gen 2 Motion Sensors Randomly Stop Working Without Notice
In August 2024, I created a post about how my gen 2 motion sensors would randomly stop working without notice, but it appears that SimpliSafe has hidden that post. The motion sensors show as being online, and I do not receive any error messages when they randomly stop sensing motion. They are installed properly and work fine until they randomly stop working. I only notice they are not working if I happen to forget to deactive away mode and walk past a motion sensor and nothing happens. Removing and replacing the battery resolves the issue temporaritly, but this is not an acceptable solution, because you have no way of knowing when they stop working. Simplisafe provided replacement sensors when the issue was originally reported, but the issue clearly has not been fixed, because it it happening again with one of the replacement sensors.

@keelyc84 We see that you have already gotten in touch with our Support team regarding this, and they have escalated your case to our tech team. A member of the team should be in touch soon to investigate further.

I have a Gen 3 unfortunately, 😉 I disabled my two motion sensors. They're PIR sensors and detect heat. Or are supposed to.
Honestly, I've had little trouble with their RF sensors, it their junk cameras that caused my bad vibes for Simplisafe.
I don't want a fly or something landing on one armed away and setting off the alarm.
Might be rare, but false alarms are a nusience.
My actual real security system allows my Zigbee motion sensors to be sorta put in series (wrielessly) lol, and requires at least two be tripped to set off my home brewed alarm sirens within one minute. And they work 100%. Grouped and zone sensors.
I use them for lights & other automations.
I'm not sure they even support gen 2 much anymore.
The RF in your sensors or base could be getting weak. There is a hack online for adding a short wire by soldering it to the RF antenna in the motion sensor to strengthen the RF signal.
The base probably can't be fixed if thats the culprit.

I am having exactly the same problem. Post if you reach a solution.

I have 3 motion sensors and they all do the same exact thing. Plus my silent notifications stopped working.

@simplisafe_admin I noticed today that this happened again with both of my motion sensors. It has now been over a year since I originally reported the issue. What is SimpliSafe doing to fix the issue?

I'm also having this problem and I am running the latest firmware version 2.23.0.1
New batteries, signal strength his high. The problem is everything shows its running ok but some of sensors do not trigger the alarm. I have 8 sensors and 4 are not triggering. You think the alarm is working but its actually not, with no indication. I can no longer recommend this alarm as looking deeper into the problem its a very comment issue that been ongoing for some time with no fix in place. The worrying bit is some people wont even know they have this issue.
I have tried all removing devices and reinstalling works for a little while but the issue reappears, one sensor is only 2 meters from the base station. If no fix is found it maybe time to remove this system and class it as a bad purchase.

Mine does the same. Makes the system useless and actually more risk because I never know if they working and provide false sense of security. Garbage.

Just discovered this post! SimpliSafe were saying they’ve never had an issue. Making me feel a little stupid and as if it was my fault.

I have four properties with SimpliSafe systems. The two newer systems, both in stalled in early 2026, use the Gen 2 motion sensors while the two older systems use the Gen 1 sensors. I have never had any problems with my Gen 1 motion sensors, however, all of my Gen 2 motion sensors will all cease to report motion simultaneously within the same system. Meaning, all sensors on one system will stop working at the same time. The sensors still show as connected and online with good batteries within the System, however, they will not report motion to the base station, or perhaps the base station stops receiving motion alerts from all motion sensors at the same time. The only way to fix this is to power cycle each motion sensor. Door sensors continue to operate. Today I installed a Gen 1 motion sensor in a system with existing Gen 2 motion sensors to see if the Gen 1 sensor continues to operate the next time my Gen 2 sensors go offline. SimpliSafe offered to replace my base station and one of the Gen 2 motion sensors as a test, but I know for a fact that this will not solve the issue. I took them up on the replacements just to progress this to the next level, but I suspect that they already know what the problem is and are unable to fix it. I will not install any new systems until this is resolved.
