Garage door sensor?

@rhickmon1, SS does not have an official garage door sensor, but over the years several customers have modified entry sensors to do the job. If you have SS3, may I suggest putting in one motion sensor? I placed one in my garage, unheated, and the temp went down to 7 or 8 degrees.  Then and now in the 90's it has performed perfectly. Note I would not attempt that with a SS2 motion sensor.

NRA Life Member knows his stuff and posted his solution with a SS2 entry sensor; should work for SS3 too.

Thank you for the quick response with link to picture. A little different thought than I had on my installation. I hadn't considered  a motion sensor. Our garage never gets as cold as yours UNLESS I was to forget close it in the middle of the winter. Figured it would tell me (garage door open  dummy) when setting it. New to this forum and you were great help.  I was actually thinking about the times you leave the house and think did We close the garage door ????. Maybe I'm the only one. Guess adding more cameras would be helpful as well.

@rhickmon1, welcome to the forums. Great bunch here all ready to assist if they can.  I live north of Chicago and, as you know, it is very, very cold here in the winter.  I can tell you the motion sensor will pick up cars in the street and people walking on the sidewalk if the door is open 50 feet away.  If you are concerned about leaving the doors open, however, I think you will be better off going with the entry switch.  BTW, that picture was only one of several methods customers have tried over the years, but I personally think it is the best. I can describe how I just installed an entry sensor on my large 2-car garage door. My door has metal stiffeners on each door section. That made it very easy because the stiffeners extended inside of the track. Your installation may be different.

I used a 2" angle bracket and a 5" long straight strapping iron. I attached ther angle bracket to the metal stiffener near the track by drilling 2 holes in the stiffener and attaching it with sheet metal screws. I attached the magnet to this bracket. I attached the straight piece to the outside of the track by drilling a 1/4 hole in the track and using a 1/4-20 bolt with a shallow head so it woldn't interfere with the rollers. I attached the entry sensor to this bracket.

By adjusting where I drilled the holes in the metal stiffener, I could position the sensor and magnet about 1/2 apart. Seems to work when I tested it.
