Automatic overhead garage door installation

Has anyone had luck installing the entry sensor on an overhead garage door? I'm having trouble installing the sensor close enough to the door to work, but not so close that the moving mechanical bits knock into the sensor. If I don't hear any other solutions I may make a 90 degree mount that attaches to the rail and sticks over the door so the sensor can be closer. I figure the cars side mirrors will ensure that the sensor will have plenty of room to reach out over the door with no risk of hitting the car.

I tried mounting it on the side of the door, but that's where the metal cable runs... and since the cable is metal the magnet seemed to like that better than the door and stuck with it instead :)

Thanks in advance

See my post in this thread titled "My Garage Sensor mounting":

There are links to my solution as well as another one that used a hinge on the door.

Thanks to everyone that helped! I ended up placing them on the top of the door and it worked great. I had to put the sensor 1.75" away from the magnet, but it seems to be well in range and the door clears it.

rather than use three entry sensors i used one motion sensor... it will go off if the door is open and someone comes into the garage... in fact it will go off if they are still in the driveway! ( we left for the weekend and got home to find a garage door open... "i thought you closed it" )  this would protect us when were stupid!

I used to have a motion sensor in our garage but for some reason the garage opener light will just come on by itself at times and when it does it triggers the motion sensor so i just took it out. Still dont know why the light comes on by itself but dont care really lol
