Outdoor Camera Firmware 1.10 (November 2022)

Hi folks,

I’m happy to announce that the latest Outdoor Camera firmware is now rolling out. As always, camera updates are delivered to your device automatically, and you can check if you already have it by heading to the Camera Settings section of the SimpliSafe app.

Here’s what’s coming to your Wireless Outdoor Camera in Version 1.10:

  • Outdoor Cameras already record based on continued activity in the scene. This update moves that processing onboard for more efficient start and stop of recordings.
  • Improved performance when initiating multiple live streams in a row.
  • Faster adjustment to light levels when a recording or live stream is initiated.
  • Fixed an issue with Activity Zones that was preventing the feature from working for some users.
  • Fixed a rare issue that caused the camera to lock up spontaneously.
  • Ongoing optimization for reducing lag times.
  • Laying the groundwork for future features and updates.

Previous Updates:

Update Note:

This update was previously rolled out as Update 1.9. After a minor fix, we are rolling out 1.10 with the same features.

As an addendum to this post, our dev team is aware of the issue that some users are experiencing, where the Outdoor Camera may trigger repeated recordings every 3 minutes at night. This firmware update may resolve at least some cases, but more work on that is ongoing.

After dealing with the "every 3 minute repeat" issue, and doing numerous tests to try to figure it out,  i found the following information that may be helpful.

First, it only happens if the night vision spotlight mode is set to on. The spotlight does NOT have to come on, just has to be set to "on". With the spotlight mode set to "on", the problem will occur night or day, but is most common at night.

Once the camera is "reset" - the problem is stopped until the next time motion is triggered, then it goes back in to the "every 3 minute repeat" (but only with the spotlight set to "on").

When the problem is occurring, you can turn off motion detection, and it continues detecting motion (that isn't there) every 3 minutes.

When the problem is occurring, you can turn off notifications, and it continues to notify you every 3 minutes.

When the problem is occurring, if you turn off motion detection, and "save" then immediately turn off notifications, and "save". Then the problem usually, but not always, stops. HOWEVER, it typically restarts at the first actual motion detection and goes back in to the "every 3 minute" loop.

Bottom line, regardless of all the above, if you turn off the "spotlight mode" and save that, the "every 3 minute repeat" loop stops. I have tested this by turning it back on and the problem comes right back. Turn it back off again and the problem is stopped.

i have not had the problem recur now for about 3 weeks, so i am confident that this has stopped the looping problem. However, i would like to be able to get the spotlight back on at some point so that i can have color video at night again.

@davey_d yeah I’m currently dealing with that right now. Previous update it fixed the issue but the new one is causing the issue again. Even turning off motion detection/ notifications it still triggers a motion detection/notifications

@davey_d Has this problem ever been resolved??! My outside camera is triggering Faldo motion alerts every three minutes and has been for the past few weeks. I don’t know if this is related to the solar panel I recently installed although a second camera is for me. The software is up to date, I have rebooted the camera. And changed sensitivity settings.  Frankly, I’m ready to cancel my service.

@Tjscan This issue was initially resolved back in November of 2022, but we have recently seen additional cases resurface. Our engineering team is looking into a solution for this. I've added your case to their open ticket, so an engineer may reach out to you as they continue working on getting this resolved.

Our SimpliSafe camera has worked perfectly for over a month since we purchased the system. After charging the camera battery and reinstalling it we started getting motion detection every 2-3 minutes. I work from a home office and the system has been recording every 2-3 minutes for the past 24 hrs straight. I have it aimed at our porch and speciffically limit its view. We had less motion detection when it had a wider range of view. The firmware is current at 1.18.

LOL - so you haven't solved the problem.  10 months of users reporting the problem and you still can't resolve it.

This is crazy!

Still haven’t received the update yet. Wondering when/if I should reboot the cameras.

thanks!

@Lsp999 1.9 is going out now. Our engineering team rolls out firmware gradually, but there's nothing to do on your end. So long as your camera is connected, you'll get it eventually.

@davey_d thanks for the quick response!

My 2 outdoor cameras still have version 1.7.  When will I get the update?

64 Messages

@davey_d Eventually. This was announced 23 days ago. I’ve even tried checking for updates manually. Are the devs rolling it out one camera at a time because they’re afraid it doesn’t work (still)?

@davey_d what percentage of customers have received the 1.9 (possibly 1.10) firmware update?

Has anyone received the update? None of my cameras have. Normally the camera updates have been pretty quick once they announce them.

@Lsp999 No

@Lsp999 No, and support is unable to push the update.

I have 1 out of 4 get the update so far.

@general_kaos thanks for the note any difference in performance?

The following is my best guess and not a Simplisafe release update.  Sorry felt I needed that disclaimer since I suspect others may get different results.

It appears the new version is able to start recording a bit earlier than previous version.

I had many videos of cars passing my front yard when camera would start recording about 3/4 of the view.  So, about 1/4 of view of picture of car.

New version appears to get about 2/3 of view of passing cars.

Make sense?

@general_kaos it's really encouraging to hear that our engineering team is making progress. But there's more to come!

@davey_d Just got off the phone with SimpliSafe tech services and they have no idea that there's a 1.9 firmware update for the cameras. I told them about this post, and they just shrugged it off. They told me that the cameras are supposed to have a delay before starting to record, I call BS. A security camera, that's delayed so bad that it won't record a thief stealing your package off your step is completely useless. I'm starting to regret paying $1000. 00 for this system. I have a few more weeks left before I can't return for a refund, if they can't fix that problem before that time is up, I will return my whole system and go with another company.

@larrhurd sorry to hear that you were given inaccurate information. While a certain level of delay is expected, just due to lag time in communication over WiFi and the internet, it shouldn't be an extended delay like a lot of our users are seeing.

Our engineering team continues work, both on rolling out update 1.9, and on even more improvements to performance in future updates.

I can expect a small delay but not so much as to allow someone to walk up and take a package and leave before the camera starts recording. As a security company that should be unacceptable. SimpliSafe just blows off my support request and says its normal. Thats unacceptable to me as a customer who just spent $1000 for a system.

@larrhurd I understand, and you're right. As I said, our dev team continues work on improving performance. Keep an eye out for the next update coming to your camera soon.

I have two outdoor cameras, one says it is on version 1.7.3.312 and the other says version 99.99.99.99. What is version 99? When can I expect the update of 1.7 to 1.9? I also have a doorbell camera, which is on version 2.6.2.171, will that be updated as well, or is that on a separate track?

@garskof the 99.99... means that your camera has an incorrectly recorded version. But that shouldn't affect its overall function, and should not interfere with the update process.

Version 1.9 is gradually rolling out across all Outdoor Cameras. Yours should be updated soon.

The Video Doorbell Pro and the Indoor Camera are on a different, older camera platform. So their update process is separate.

@davey_d My camera is showing V99.99.99 too and it keeps recording every 3 minutes.  I can’t keep recharging everyday till our camera gets updated…please help.

@davey_d still haven’t received a response or a solution to this issue.  When will the update be released?  Can I get a refund on this system, if it isn’t addressed soon?  My cheaper cameras do a better job than this camera.

@davey_d not sure how simplisafe did it, but they did.  I had one of my cameras updated to 1.9.1 but all my cameras are now showing 1.7.  Any ideas on how they rolled back an update?

I checked all four cameras (multiple times) before I posted above.

14 Messages

@general_kaos Have you called Simplisafe customer service?

105 Messages

Customer service has never heard of the 1.9 update. I've called them a few times about it, the latest was last night, and they said there's no such thing even though I showed them this forum post.  When I chatted with them, I even copied and pasted the post that says there's a 1.9 update. Either they are lying, or they don't know that there's a community forum which is hard for me to believe since its on their support website.

I am disappointed that the support team is unable to assist in updating the firmware on the cameras.

Current performance and battery life are not great, and I would like to see if the latest firmware provides any improvement.

Unfortunately, the updates will be pushed automatically at some point in the future.

My Outdoor Camera now has 1.10. Are there any release notes for 1.10?

@kennybryant 1.10 is the same update as 1.9, with a minor fix.
