how long should an antenna wire be?
I have a water sensor in my basement, and its connection cuts off/on. I took it apart and soldered a straight wire to replace the short semi-circular antenna inside. The copper wire is currently about 28 inches long. (surprisingly) the water sensor still works after this surgery. (disappointingly) the range does not seem to be improved. Question for an antenna guru? How long should this wire be? Allegedly Simplisafe gen 3 uses 433MH frequency. I c

I'm sure you know this already but these kinds of modifications are not supported by SimpliSafe in any way and almost certainly will void your warranty. That said...
For a 1/4 wave monopole antenna for 433mhz the optimal length is 17.3cm or 6.8in. Take a look at https://service.shure.com/s/article/antenna-types for the science and the math.

There's a fair amount of mystery about what is "best" -- stuff about ground planes and and electrical grounding; I computed 0.69 m wavelength. I'm going to try half that, and if that doesn't work, 1/4 wave length.
Thanks.
