Outdoor Camera Recording Every 3 Minutes on firmware update 1.18 and 1.20

We are seeing a resurgence in reports of users who are seeing sudden and repeated motion triggers, resulting in a new recording every 3 minutes, and eventually a rapid battery drain for their Wireless Outdoor Camera. These repeated triggers seem to be occurring both during the day, and when Night Vision is activated.

A similar issue was resolved on firmware update 1.10 (November 2022), but users are now seeing new cases after their Outdoor Camera updated to firmware 1.18 (September 2023).

Our engineering team has identified the issue, and a fix is IN PROGRESS. A new firmware update will be rolling out soon to address the issue.

In the meantime, it can help to adjust the following settings for your camera experiencing this issue:

  • Change your camera’s motion detection setting to All Motion
  • If you have Activity Zones set up, adjust them to also block off the zones around the image that your camera is detecting
  • Turn your camera’s sensitivity down to Medium or Low

You can make the above settings changes to your Outdoor Camera in the SimpliSafe mobile app by navigating to Cameras on the bottom navigation bar > select the gear icon in the top right corner > select [your camera] > Motion Detection.

In similar situations with other defective products users have joined together on a class-action.

I removed battery and hard booted my outdoor camera, and it is still showing motion every 3 minutes or so.  What now?  This didn’t happen until the last 2 or 3 days.

@wakarusan I moved your comment over to this thread, as this is an issue that our dev team is actively working on fixing as soon as possible. Once this solution is ready to roll out, we will provide an update in this thread. In the meantime, it may help to slightly adjust the angle of your Outdoor Camera to prevent this.

Just for kicks and giggles I'm wondering what the actual problem was, curious minds want to know lol

Do you mean "problem IS" and not "was", as this problem has been ongoing for over 2 years now and they still have not solved it!

I just ordered a Nest outdoor camera and will be putting my Simplisafe camera where it belongs ... in the trash.

I was able to temporarily solve the issue a couple of weeks ago by resetting the camera and adding it back to my system. However, the same issue reemerged this week (notifications every 3 minutes as soon as the sun goes down). I also noticed another of my cameras, which had been working fine since I purchased it, beginning to do this sporadically and it has led to significant battery drain despite being connected to a solar panel.

Is Simplisafe actually doing something about this? The communication from the Simplisafe team has been less than reassuring. The fixes they suggest are temporary solutions at best and any other competent technology company would have already released an update to address the problem by now.

@MWM Our devs are hard at work on a solution to this problem so we can roll it out to our users as soon as possible. Once the fix it ready to live, we will provide an update in this thread. But in the meantime, we have heard from them that making the following adjustments to your camera experiencing this can help:

  • Change your camera’s motion detection setting to All Motion
  • If you have Activity Zones set up, adjust them to also block off the zones around the image that your camera is detecting
  • Turn your camera’s sensitivity down to Medium or Low

I just wanted to pop in to say this is still happening to us. Our camera is on v1.18.23.5603... I just replaced the battery and it's nonstop. Our other outdoor cam doesn't do this. I've already tried fully resetting the camera and re-provisioning it but it's still happening. Please help?

@castiscoular Our devs are working very hard to get a solution to this issue out as soon as they can. But in the meantime, they have said that changing the camera's following motion detection settings can help to prevent these recordings:

  • Change your camera’s motion detection setting to All Motion
  • If you have Activity Zones set up, adjust them to also block off the zones around the image that your camera is detecting
  • Turn your camera’s sensitivity down to Medium or Low

My outdoor cameras (2) continue to record and notify every minute with nothing to trigger them. We’ve tried blocking certain areas we think might be triggering and nothing. Alarms continue. This drains the battery 3 times faster than expected.  Is there any update to program changes on stopping the recordings? Or is there something g we could be doing differently???

@karennik it sounds like you've been experiencing the same issue in this thread, so I've moved your comment here. Work is in progress on a fix. We'll keep you updated here when we have more news.

Hello, i recently got a simplisafe canera system for my home, and 1 of my outdoor cameras keep triggering its motion detection at night until the battery runs out. The camera is on 1.20.32.7392 update.

I have already tried turning the motion sesitivity down to low and there are no trees or bushes that coukd move in the wind. I think it might just be picking up shadows but im not sure.

Any suggestions?

@TheDudeWill You can try redirecting the angle of the camera a bit to avoid directly facing a streetlight or heavy tree limbs, if possible. Also, try elminating certain zones in its view that would have these items. No matter what you do, if it sleets or snows, the cameras do have a tendency to keep recording events in those conditions. My two are outdoor cams are on AC, so power is not an issue but notices are.  I do have a former coworker/friend that has a camera facing his backyard and the battery has been lasting greater than 1 1/2 months on one charge so it is possible.

@TheDudeWill the issue you describe sounds like the one in this thread, so I merged your post into this one. We'll keep you updated when we have more news on an upcoming fix.

Hello, there must be a fix date Simplisafe are targeting in their work tracking tool - what is it?

LMAO, read other posts, Simplisafe is simply stating they are aware of the problem and are investigating it.  Here's my analysis, lack of code control and reintroduced a problem previously resolved.  When the same issue keeps recurring, it's usually code re-use, even when the code has been established to have a bug and code control would have prevented that code reuse.

As the meme states "Convince Me Otherwise".

I am having this issue on my front door camera at night time. I have tried the blind zones, turning the sensitivity to low as well as toggling from people only to all activity. None of these fixed my issue.

I see that the engineers are working on a fix, but this thread goes back several months. Does anyone know when this will be taken care of by an update?

Hi @Willj92,

Work is still in progress on a fix. We'll update this thread when it starts to roll out.

Hi Davey - Is there any ETA on the fix for this issue? Our outdoor cameras are useless at night, which is when they are needed most.

Thanks!

Hi @mwiner,

I do not have an exact date on when this fix will be released, but it should be soon. Once this fix is finalized, we'll provide an update here.

For me, the issue is continuing to get worse. At times there are multiple false alerts every few minutes. Settings are people only and set to medium sensitivity. All road traffic is blocked and when reviewing recordings, usually, all appear still.

We are experiencing the same “death loop” issue. Sad that this has been going on for months and Simplisafe still has not found a fix.

@adamjmcpilot It has been going on for 2-1/2 years since I bought my camera. I have since replaced it with a Nest camera. Problem solved.

My cams have gone from 1.18 to FW 1.20.37.8185 as of a couple days ago and are continuing to not exhibit the every 3 minute false alarms.  So far, things are stable.  Last time they went from 1.18 to 1.20, one can had a meltdown.  So far, so good.
