Setting to Rotate Camera View by 90º

Add an app feature that allows every camera view to be rotated by the user in 90-degree increments.  This should be a standard feature to allow for unavoidable mounting issues.  For example, I cannot mount my SimpliSafe Doorbell Camera pro vertically due to the brick and wiring configuration, which means the camera feed is permanently stuck rotated 90 degrees.  Needless to say, that makes it much harder to view at a glance, especially given the auto-rotate displays of smartphones.

This should work for indoor, outdoor, and doorbell cameras.

Hi all,

This request is currently NOT IN DEVELOPMENT. To explain, it would help to understand a little bit more about how our cameras work.

Our cameras' motion detection is focused slightly downwards - so they have a better chance of catching intruders walking around below the camera itself. Unfortunately, this means that if you were to turn the camera by 90º, then the motion detection would be pointed sideways. As you can imagine, that's not particularly ideal. So at least when it comes to our current models, this request is not possible.

If you cannot make the camera view rotate in software, how about making the mount so that the mount can rotate.

Then the camera would always be "upright" even if it was mounted to a wall or a ceiling.

@davey_d With all due respect, your reply does not address my suggestion in any meaningful way.

The orientation of the camera in the hardware does not preclude the ability to rotate the image in the software.  I'm suggesting that we be given the ability within the app to rotate the image produced by the camera, regardless of its physical orientation.

I'm not talking about being able to rotate the physical camera.  But even if I were, it would be completely irrelevant that the motion detection would be "pointed sideways," because the ability to rotate the physical camera would allow us to correct for the orientation deviation.  In other words, if the camera has to be installed vertically so that the camera's motion detection will be "focused slightly downwards," then the ability to rotate the camera if the doorbell had to be installed sideways would be ideal so that you could orient the motion detection focus toward the appropriate area!

This response does not at all address my suggestion, and it's flatly wrong in its assertions.

@TheGrabes Thank you for this idea! I'll forward it to our devs for their consideration.

agree, I have a choice of upside down view or sideways......it would be great if there was a software control to set the view.

Don't understand the technology. Would be helpful. Either in the hardware or software to allow some sort of work around. Thank you.

I’ve tried purchasing different mounts and would agree that under eave installations work better with permanent mounts in a 90degree orientation due to the size and mounting hardware. That said, I’m running into sensitivity issues and suspect that the optimum focal area and range for motion sensing will not work well. So in future cameras, it would be preferred to ensure that 90 degree orientations can similarly optimize the area where motion sensing is most critical in such an orientation.

Please make this a priority. It cannot be that hard to rotate the view of the camera 90 degrees.

I called Support about this this evening and was told it would be possible to rotate the image in settings.  I just mounted two SSDB3 doorbell cameras horizontally and - can't rotate the image.  Not a show stiopper, but pretty annoying given I had just hung up with support!

For any interested customers, since SimpliSafe still hasn't added this feature, do the following: with autorotate on, rotate your phone 90 degrees twice; once horizontally and then another 90 so your phone is upside down. The app doesn't readjust when the phone is upside down, and you'll get a better view in full screen.

Though simplisafe *SHOULD* add this feature already. It would be trivial to implement and already is implemented for other cameras.   For my use case, I'm in a similar scenario to OP; I couldn't drill into the brick to mount the plate so I'm stuck with a crappy viewing experience. Additionally, the excuse of "our motion detection is oriented downwards" doesn't matter. Some users may prefer having the motion detection pointed "sideways" rather than downwards since that's the only way people can approach their door.

Because SimpliSafe made unnecessary assumptions on their users' behalf rather than maximize the product's flexibility users might switch providers. Especially since this is such an easy software fix on the app, it stands to reason to make the change and make your existing customers happy and open the door to more people purchasing the product since they may be in a similar scenario to us.

I too am forced to mount the doorbell horizontally.   Rather than look at my phone upside down, I would request that Simplysafe allow for a 90 degree rotation on the view.  I am sure that I am among many who would appreciate this option.
