Make Character Limit For Names Of Devices And Cameras The Same (And Make It Greater Than It Is Today!)

Two questions for SimpliSafe:

1) Is there any reason the character limit for cameras is 14 characters but the character limit for devices is 13 characters? If you have a naming convention for one that's at 14 characters you can't make it the same for the other when there's a 13 character limit.

1a) For that matter, why is the limit so small? Why isn't this 18 or 20 or something? There appears to be plenty of room in the UI in both "Settings/Device Settings" as well as "Settings/Camera Settings" and there's more than enough room in the main Cameras section as well.

2) Did the maximum number of characters for the camera name change in the last year or two? I could have sworn it used to be 17 at some point.

It's WiFi, not your bank account, do you really think someone is going to spend dozens, maybe hundreds, if not thousands of years, trying to crack your WiFi when they can probably find one with no security?

And, then, just change it every now and then and start the clock all over again.

I'm not referring to the WiFI SSID or password. (Neither of those words exist in my post...)  Those have a 32 character limit per https://support.simplisafe.com/hc/en-us/articles/360033119632-What-do-I-do-if-my-System-is-not-connecting-to-WiFi- but again, that's not relevant here.

I'm referring to the names you give the cameras and sensors like "Front Door Inside" or "Bay Window East Side" or similar so you can differentiate which sensors or cameras are reporting information.

Hey Worthing,

If I recall correctly, the character limit for sensor names is set in the Base Station firmware, since it maintains the actual sensor list. But I'm not sure how that also applies to cameras, and why it couldn't use more characters. This is another good one I'll have to forward to our engineering team.

@davey_d Any update on this? I’ve just purchased a large system and differentiating between the units is unnecessarily messy and difficult with such few characters. Please consider upping the limit, it would be extremely useful especially for those of us with smart homes connecting these pieces into existing ecosystems… Mstr Bdrm Dr 1 is not very nice in a UI or when triggering a voice command

@braeden63 Unfortunately I do not have any updates on this request right now, but I'll bubble this back up to our devs!

Please allow for longer device names!!!!

A limit of 13 characters is too restrictive when you have a larger home and are trying to name the door and window sensors descriptively enough to easily identify them when a sensor goes off.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled Longer Device Names

@MehulAmin First, I agree with you, more than 13 characters would be nice, however, with some planning you can make it work. I own a two story colonial, full basement, 2 car attachd garage. Just the first and 2nd floor is 2600 sq ft and have 40+ devices.  First step: don't include the type of sensor in the name. The push alerts, SMS or email messages automatically tell you that. Next, standardize room types, like BR for bedroom, MBR, KT (Kitchen) etc.  For two car garage MA or DL will do with our initials. Yes, not ideal but gets the job done. There are many other features I want to see from SS before they get to this.

I'm *very* surprised to not see more people complaining about this and requesting higher limits. 13 characters seems very arbitrary and potentially indicative of a critical shortcoming in the firmware. Can't even name an entry sensor "Kitchen Window 1" because there is not enough characters. I disagree with with a limit below 64 characters to be honest, but 13? Way too restrictive.
