Camera Questions

Are cameras recording while system is off? Are they recording me while I’m home? How do I access my cameras while I’m away?

@rodroyso​ What do you mean by "night mode"?  You can configure cameras to behave differently in different modes (off, home, away) if that's what you're asking and you can configure them to be off BUT here is an important caveat. Regardless of how your cameras are configured they will ALWAYS record during some events as detailed in https://support.simplisafe.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029594152-When-does-the-camera-record- :

  • Alarms
  • Disarming your SimpliSafe system
  • Camera Detected Motion
  • User Triggered Recording
  • Secret Alerts (When Enabled)
  • User Initiated Test of the SimpliSafe system
  • Duress Alarm
  • Silent Panic button
  • Entry Delay (After entering your home while the system is alarmed)
  • Power Restored

If you have a Simplicam configured to keep the privacy shade closed, the shade will open to allow recording during these events.

Edit: And no, you can't turn this behavior off. All of your cameras will record during these events whether you want them to or not.

Hi rodroyso,

Worthing has some great points there. I would just further clarify that our cameras only record when they are triggered - which can either be by their own built-in motion sensor, or by events from your main alarm system (alarms, disarms, etc.).

With the Indoor Camera, you can control when the motion sensor is active (i.e. whether it should be active in Home, Away, or Off modes). It's tied to the Shutter options in the Camera Settings page in the app - when the shutter is open, the motion sensor is on.

However, regardless of the state of your system, the camera will also record for system events. That's what Worthing is talking about in his reply.

But finally, you should know that ALL of your recordings are encrypted and locked to your account. Nobody, not even SimpliSafe's own employees, can just view them without your permission. And of course, you can always review your Timeline and remove any footage immediately, that you don't want to stay on our servers.

Problems with one camera of five used on 1800 sq ft, single story ranch home.

Discussed in chat with SS Tech Support, say only points at my Wi-Fi.  The following are the details.

* It comes on and can see day or night, but not as crisp a picture as other cameras.  (Regardless of location never has worked with a clear crisp picture.)

** The motion sensor rarely works so NO HISTORY to view. I can walk right up to it and nothing.  Then it may trigger sensor, but rarely.)

* Distance does not exceed 20 feet to any camera from centrally located Wi-Fi & Extender.  Driveway camera is five feet from great working garage indoor camera.  Both similar distance from router and extender.

** Upgraded AT&T fiber optic cable had Router replaced due to proven questionable issues with equipment.  Works great now for only two of us now at home, streaming TV video, cell phones, and PC network.  Signal strength for Wi-Fi Router & Extender are 30 to 50 dBm walking around the house with cellphone app.  The average signal strength is approximately 44dBm.  Extender is a quality NETGEAR device that does not give me any trouble.

*** I can see only solution is to replace the indoor camera with outdoor kit for another outdoor camera?  Motion sensor is questionable at best and picture quality is lacking.  Like I told SS Support, I guess I have to wait for a Xmas SALE to get new camera and power cord?

I would like some clarification:

  • Disarming your SimpliSafe system--So it records when the system is disarmed. Does this mean if I turn off the alarm with the app, it is still going to film me coming into my home? If I turn off the alarm with the keypad, it is going to film me doing so?  If so, for how long does it record
  • Camera Detected Motion:  If the system is set to HOME, is the camera still going to come on and film when it detects motion inside the house?
  • Entry Delay (After entering your home while the system is alarmed): If I turn off the alarm with the keypad, it is going to film me doing so?  If so, for how long does it record?
  • Power Restored: How long will the camera film after this event?

I appreciate your clarification.

No matter the device you use, whenever you disarm your system all of your SimpliSafe cameras will wake up and film a 10-second recording.

The SimpliCam Wired Indoor Camera and Smart Alarm Wireless Indoor Camera both come with privacy shutters that physically cover the camera's lens. When the privacy shutter is on, the camera will not record. If you don't want your indoor camera to film any motion when your system is armed in Home Mode, you can set the privacy shutter to be on during that armed state.

Depending on the camera you have, take the following steps in the SimpliSafe mobile app:

If you have a SimpliCam (the black camera)

  1. Select the My System gear at the bottom of the screen
  2. Select Camera Settings
  3. Choose [your SimpliCam]
  4. Under Camera Behavior, select Home
  5. Toggle the Privacy Shutter setting to Closed
  6. Tap Save in the upper right corner to save this change

If you have a Smart Alarm Indoor Camera (the white camera)

  1. Select the My System gear at the bottom of the screen
  2. Select Camera Settings
  3. Choose [your Smart Alarm]
  4. Under Camera Behavior, select Home
  5. Toggle the Motion Detection setting to Off
  6. Tap Save in the upper right corner to save this change

During the Entry Delay countdown, the camera will record for 30 seconds, or until the system is disarmed.

After a Power Restored event, the camera will record for 10 seconds.
