FYI: Your SimpliSafe Cameras May Not Record During a Break In

Wanted to share something that happened yesterday because I don’t think this is obvious to most users, and it really matters in a real emergency.

Yesterday my mom had someone try to break into her house. The alarm went off, lights came on, and SimpliSafe started calling her. Her first instinct was to open the front door camera. She clearly saw the intruder, who freaked out once the alarm started blaring and ran off.

Trying to get more detail to help police, she switched to another outdoor camera to zoom in and get a better look.

When the police arrived, they asked if the cameras caught anything. She opened the event history expecting to show the footage. Instead, there was nothing useful. No clear video of the person. Just clips with no one there.

We called SimpliSafe support and were told that because she was watching live view, the cameras were not recording. To record while watching live, she would have needed to open the toolbar and manually hit record.

I understand how this might make sense from a technical or software standpoint. But in a real situation, when someone is actively trying to break into your home, that is not how people think.

No one in that moment is calmly saying, “Let me make sure I press record.”

The assumption most people have is that during an alarm or break-in, cameras are already recording automatically, especially when motion is detected and the system is actively alerting you.

The end result here was that during an actual crime, the system didn’t save the most important footage. That feels like a gap between how the system is designed and how it’s actually used in the real world.

At a minimum, it seems like

  • Cameras should automatically record during an alarm
  • Live view should not prevent recording by default

  • Emergency situations should prioritize saving evidence without extra steps

Posting this not to bash SimpliSafe, but because this is exactly the kind of scenario these systems are built for, and it feels like something worth improving.

Curious if others here were aware of this behavior or have run into something similar.

Hey @ynashy

First and foremost I pray your mother is doing well. There are fewer things more unnerving than a break in. Her experience and how the system should operate don't seem to have lined up exactly (not to mention the misinformation from the Support Agent which I would like to investigate as well), most importantly during an alarm cameras will record for 3 minutes even if someone is live streaming the view. I'd like to send you a private message so I can get more details around the account would that be okay?
