I just installed the Video Doorbell in September. Don't forget that the higher the resolution, the greater the minimum upload speed has to be, and with more than one camera. . . it has to be greater still. I have experimented with all three levels of resolution in the Video doorbell, and all three provide a clear and recognizable image quality on my Pixel phone, my Android tablet and my PC with a 27 inch monitor. EVEN 480p!
When setting up the doorbell, I decided I would stick with the default of 720p. Primarily for aesthetic reasons, it doesn't require much more upload speed and bandwidth than 480p but is a bit sharper overall. Especially since the tech requirements for 1080p jump up considerably overall for what in my eyes was not that much more resolution. And when I add more cameras, the bandwidth both up and down, won't have to be increased. (Yes, I'm cheap)
Also, when I thought about what my goal with the Video doorbell was, I realized that what I wanted was usable security footage, I wasn't making "Star Wars" or "Game of Thrones", and 1080p (or greater) won't be any more reliable, or usable from a security POV.
While the first generation of our SimpliCams was only available in up to 720p, all of the cameras that we currently sell, the second generation of the SimpliCam as well as the Video Doorbell Pro are both capable of 1080p resolution. As glenbarrington mentioned, the cameras come set with a default resolution of 720p. The resolution can easily be adjusted and set to 1080p through the SimpliSafe app once the camera has been installed to your account.
Please provide more information - when SimpliCam became1080p and how can I know If my recently replaced SimpliCam support 1080p?
How your customers can know of it's safe to activate 1080p for SimplCam? I have two cameras and both of them have options 480p, 720p and 1080p - but both cameras are not working when 1080p is enabled.
Normally, you can check the resolution settings to see what resolutions the SimpliSafe camera is capable of using, however, currently there is a bug in the iOS version of the SimpliSafe app that will show 1080p as an option for our 720p cameras. We are currently working on this bug but in the meantime, you can find out if your camera is capable of 1080p by checking the model number. The newer 1080p SimpliCams will have the model number: SSCM2 while the original 720p SimpliCams will have the model number: SSCM1.
This issue of the camera app showing 480/720/1080 option is not working. Since one of my cameras is 1080 capable (why I bought it) when I attempt to select the 1080 option the app does not show an 'accept' button. For the same reason I could not set it to 480 of I wanted to. I can not change from the default 720. I use an Android phone.
@mnesotajon Once you change the camera's resolution to 1080p in the SimpliSafe mobile app, tap the < arrow on the top left corner of the screen. This will take you back to the main Camera Settings page where you can then tap "Save" on the top right corner of the screen to apply this resolution change.
