Outdoor Camera Battery

Yesterday afternoon the battery percentage was showing it was at thirty percent.  Charged it back up and reinstalled it at 5:30pm. This morning, I wake up to a notification that the battery was completely discharged and was offline. Took it down again and will recharge/reinstall to see what happens. I’ve seen plenty of questions and posts on here from other users who are also experiencing battery issues.  Wondering if any of you have also had your OC batteries discharge this quickly.  Firmware v1.10.2.368 Thanks!

Thank you for reporting this issue. When you plug in the battery, do you see it light up to indicate that it's charging? If not, then you might want to try different USB ports or chargers, in case that's the issue.

But if it doesn't charge no matter what, the next step might be that we need to replace that battery. Our Support team can help with that.

@davey_d  Yes, the battery light did light up and I recharged fully.  So far so good.  Both of my outdoor cameras are now connected to solar panels and have held their charge overnight.  I’ll follow up with support if the issue continues.  Thanks for the reply.  Have a safe and a Happy Thanksgiving.

I replaced the battery,  recharged it and have it hooked up to a solar panel and nothing is helping it keep its charge.  I replaced mine 3 days ago and it is already saying low battery.  That’s after charging it overnight.

@mowashington85 This happened the first week i had installed the solar panel.  The battery was dead within a week.  The recent issues with my refreshing app have stopped with the replacement batter. So far.

Hi @mowashington85 ,

Thanks for reporting. I suspect that there's something more going on, that is rapidly draining the battery. Have you already tried the reset, just in case it's a software issue?

Here's how:

  1. Press and hold the button on the back of the camera for 16 seconds.
  2. When you release, the camera will reboot.
  3. You can then set it up again in the SimpliSafe like a new camera.

If that doesn't work, and you see the camera draining within 3 days again, our Support team may need to replace the battery - or even the whole camera for you.

Are you getting a notification every 3 minutes? If so the camera is in what we call the death loop and the spotlight comes on and stays on which will kill the battery fast and only way to fix is to climb a stupid ladder and get it down delete it from the system and reinstall again. This happens to me again tonight on Christmas eve and it's 20 degrees out and soon as I'm done with one another one does it and yep here we go again so if it is doing a loop every 3 min then that's what it is

@lance843 Sorry to hear that.  With me it was more the battery percentages going up and down.  I wasn’t getting any notifications, I was checking the battery levels myself through the app. So far the new replacement/backup battery was stayed topped off.  It’s only been installed since 12/21 so let’s see what happens.

@joshuasperdue sorry to hear that. It would be helpful to know what you've already tried, so we can eliminate some possibilities.

Also what version of firmware is your camera on? You can find out through the SimpliSafe App, under Cameras > ⚙️ Camera Settings > [your camera].

The latest version is 1.10, which was rolled out late last year.

What everybody is missing is that the problem is that it's the batteries themselves that are not charging, not that they're discharging too quickly. They appear to (go from 1 dot to 3 in short order) but if you unplug and replug them to the charger you're right back to 1 dot. I've been through this with all 3 batteries from all 3 outdoor cameras I own AND the 2 replacement batteries I bought on amazon (lots of folks there in reviews noting the same).

The operator at Simplisafe told me that it's been over a month since they've had any batteries - apparently this is a huge problem. Hopefully Simplisafe will let us all know when they can ship us batteries that aren't defective.

@Thom apologies for the delay. We'll get your replacement batteries out ASAP.

In the meantime, could there also possibly be an issue with the method of charging? I personally have had trouble in the past with certain charging blocks or cables, and have had the best results from plugging into a PC. Or if you don't have one at home, try a 5V charging block from a phone (like the white iPhone ones).

Can you just keep the cameras plugged in without the battery, with the usb port

Hi @marytorresmsw,

The Outdoor Camera does require a battery to function. However, you can keep the camera plugged into an AC outlet with the Outdoor Camera Power Cable. You can find the cable here on our website.
