Mounting Outdoor Cameras Upside Down

Does the SimpliSafe outdoor camera’s motion detection work equally well when the camera is mounted upside down as it does when the camera is mounted upside up?

Hi @dean_33,

The built-in motion sensor is oriented slightly down, so when the camera is set upside-down, you'll just want to point it slightly lower. I would suggest trying out different positions by walking in and out of view and waiting for the camera to trigger.

Thank you Davey. Out of curiosity, what method does the camera use to detect motion? Does the camera have a PIR sensor to detect motion? Or does it use some other method?

Yes, the Outdoor Camera's built-in motion sensor uses Passive Infrared (PIR).

Can the image be rotated when the camera is mounted upside down?

Yep! If you already have your Outdoor Camera set up, you can find the Rotate Image 180º in the Camera Settings page.

I have tried the “rotate image” button however nothing has changed. Even tried to close and re open the app but no success. Any other recommendations?

@jondvmi after you changed the setting, did you make sure to hit the "Save" button on the top right?

Can the outdoor camera be mounted under the soffit and not lose distance from 30 to 15', by Rotate the Image 180 degrees in the camera settings?

@RoseRx Mounting your Outdoor Camera under a soffit should not minimize how far away it can detect motion and record. When mounting the camera upside down, I would just angle it a little lower so its motion sensor is not obstructed. Then, you can turn on "Rotate Image 180º" within the camera's settings so all recordings and livestreams are right side up.
