How to Install SimpliSafe® Sensors and Devices
SimpliSafe® offers a number of sensors to help protect your home or business from break-ins, flooding, and more. This article will provide you with the resources you need to install your sensors.
Burglary Sensors
Entry Sensors defend your doors and windows from potential intruders. The Entry Sensor is made up of two parts: a sensor and a magnet. When these pieces are lined up within two inches of each other, the SimpliSafe® system knows the door or window is closed. When they move more than two inches apart, the system sees it has been opened.
Before installing the Entry Sensor, you will need:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A Phillips head screwdriver (optional when mourning the sensor using the included screws)
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Entry Sensor, refer to the Entry Sensor Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab).
Glassbreak Sensors are programmed to listen for the specific frequency of windows breaking. We recommend placing the Glassbreak Sensor within 20 feet of the window you want to protect, facing the glass.
Before installing the Glassbreak Sensor, you will need:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A Phillips head screwdriver (optional when mourning the sensor using the included screws)
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Glassbreak Sensor, refer to the Glassbreak Sensor Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab).
We have two models of the Motion Sensor: the Motion Sensor Gen 1 and Motion Sensor Gen 2. If you purchased a Motion Sensor after April 2023, it’s likely that you have the Motion Sensor Gen 2. If you purchased your Motion Sensor before April 2023, you most likely have our Motion Sensor Gen 1. If you aren’t sure which Motion Sensor you have, refer to the Which Version of the Motion Sensor do I Have (opens in new tab) article in the Help Center.
Before installing either Motion Sensor, you will need the following:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A Phillips head screwdriver (optional when mourning the sensor using the included screws)
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Motion Sensor Gen 1, refer to the Motion Sensor Gen 1 Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab), and for the Motion Sensor Gen 2, see the Motion Sensor Gen 2 Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab).
Environmental Sensors
The Temperature Sensor triggers an alarm when your home’s temperature goes above or below the temperature range that you set. We won’t request dispatch of emergency services for temperature alarms, but with professional monitoring (opens in new tab) you’ll receive an automated call letting you know about the alarm.
Before installing the Temperature Sensor, you will need the following:
A Gen 3 Simplisafe® system
A Phillips head screwdriver (optional when mourning the sensor using the included screws)
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Temperature Sensor, refer to the Temperature Sensor Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab) for more details.
The Water Sensor alerts you to leaks and flooding, helping you prevent expensive water damage. They are always sensing whether your SimpliSafe® system is armed or not.
Before installing the Water Sensor, you will need a Gen 3 SimpliSafe System already set up. For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Water Sensor, refer to the Water Sensor Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab) for more details.
Life Safety Devices
The Carbon Monoxide Detector sniffs out dangerous leaks that can happen in kitchens, basements, and more. Because carbon monoxide is an invisible and odorless gas, Carbon Monoxide leaks could otherwise go undetected. We recommend having at least one detector per floor, in a bedroom or in a central location.
Before installing the Carbon Monoxide Detector, you will need the following:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A Phillips head screwdriver
A drill with a ¼” drill bit
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Carbon Monoxide Detector, refer to the Carbon Monoxide Detector Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab).
The Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector alerts you at the first sign of smoke or CO within your home. You should place this device near sleeping areas, ensuring that there is a detector on every floor of your home.
Before installing the Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector, you will need the following:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A Phillips head screwdriver
A drill with a ¼” drill bit
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector, refer to the Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab).
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Listener monitors third-party smoke and CO detectors in your home by listening for their audible alarms. When a Smoke and/or CO alarm is heard, the Alarm Listener will trigger the alarm for your SimpliSafe® system.
Before installing the Alarm Listener, you will need:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A third-party Smoke and/or CO detector you want to monitor
A Phillips head screwdriver
A drill with a ¼” drill bit when installing on drywall, or a 1/16” drill bit when installing on wood or plaster
A ladder or step stool
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Alarm Listener, refer to the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Listener Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab) for more details.
The Smoke Detector alerts you at the first sign of smoke. When the Smoke Detector senses smoke it will trigger your SimpliSafe® alarm, whether or not your system is armed. You should place Smoke Detectors near sleeping areas and make sure that there is one on every floor within your home.
Before installing the Smoke Detector, you will need the following:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® System
A Phillips head screwdriver
A drill with a ¼” drill bit
A ladder or step stool
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Smoke Detector, refer to the Smoke Detector Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab) for more details.

The Smart Lock makes sure that your door is always locked, even if you forget to lock it yourself. If you purchased a Smart Lock after October 2024, you likely have the Smart Lock Series 2. If you purchased your Smart Lock before October 2024, you have the original Smart Lock. If you don’t know which Smart Lock you have, see the Which Version of the Smart Lock do I Have (opens in new tab) article.
Before installing the Smart Lock, you will need the following:
A Gen 3 SimpliSafe® system
A door with a Single Cylinder Deadbolt
Painters tape
A Phillips head screwdriver
For step-by-step instructions on how to install the Smart Lock, refer to the Smart Lock Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab), and for the Smart Lock Series 2, see the Smart Lock Series 2 Overview and Installation Guide (opens in new tab).
