Self monitoring with video recording

I want to buy a simplisafe system for my house in Mexico. I will buy it in the United States and drive it down with app already downloaded and an account started. I only want the $9.99 self monitoring and video recording subscription plan. Since I will not need all the extras that involve operators, law enforcement, and fire departments, will the system work for me there? If not why not? Will it not work because it will show up wifi a Mexican ip address? Or should those basic functions of app access and video recording still work?

Hi @Dglahn03 ,

I'm sorry to say, unfortunately we are not able to support systems outside of our two markets - the United States, and the United Kingdom.

You may be able to use the alarm system by itself as a standalone local noise-maker. But the smartphone app, which not only allows remote control but is also required for camera setup, is not available in international app stores. You also may not be able to receive the confirmation texts, which are required for login.

And of course, if you did want to activate Monitoring Service, we wouldn't be able to support your address outside of the US and UK either.

We'll make sure you know if and when we expand our services to your region.

This question gets asked every so often and I believe @davey_d confirmed previously there's nothing stopping your system physically located in another country from talking back to the US servers via WiFi. (They're not black/whitelisting IP ranges to stop devices from working in some areas.) That said, as Davey noted, you're completely unsupported, some functionality won't work (like cellular back up) and you may be wasting your time and money.

If those odds still seem OK you're welcome to game and see if it works. :)

@worthing I agree. Once everything is set up, the system and cameras can certainly run okay. But If you ever need to reinstall the app, you'd want to connect to a US-based VPN to get to the US app store, and then get your MFA login confirmation to a US-based number. It's a little complicated for most people, but doable. I just want to make sure they know the risk.
