Self-service deletions of video recordings

SimpliSafe-

Sometimes you capture something you do not want recorded. Customers should absolutely have the ability to manually delete any recording. The 30-day automated deletion is not sufficient.

Please remedy this ASAP. Ring offers this for their doorbell (purchased before SimpliSafe) and this is super convenient and easy to delete. This is a table stakes feature.

I'd be willing to bet they do not make this change, and even if they do, it will be at least a year or two away.

The only way to exist with SS and keep your sanity, is to accept the way it is now.  If you wait for a change, it may or may not occur (more often not) and even it it does occur, it will take forever and they won't tell  you in advance.

+1, being able to delete the errant video of yourself running into a room in your underwear due to some emergency is a MUST. I honestly can't believe this isn't part of the basic set of CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete) that someone MUST have written into some bloated Project Requirements Document ages and ages ago.

Here SS, let me write this User Story for you in the "AS-A-I-WANT-SO-THAT" format you probably understand:

"AS A person with at least a minimal sense of decorum (enough to purchase a security system for enhancing privacy and reducing crime, anyway) I WANT to be able to delete recordings of myself SO THAT I can feel like SS isn't creeping on my unintentionally revealing/embarrassing video content without my permission."

There, the work's halfway done for you.

Not even 5% done.  You have submitted a requirement.  They need to evaluate the requirement, decide if they "can" do it (that means practically and economically; of course it can be done if there are no concerns about side effects, cost and return), then they decide if they "want" to do it (hint, they really don't like to change their design).  This would be probably 20 - 30% of the work.

Has SS ever implemented anything that's been asked for?  This is not meant to be a snarky or sarcastic question.  I legitimately was wondering.

They seem like the type of company that goes along based on their own internal design and ideas, with very little thought for anything legitimate that the customer might want.

A few times, but it's been WELL after it was requested.  Some were part of the new version of system.

One recent case was the alleged addition of doorbell chimes from the base station.

But yeah, pretty much they do what they think is best, not what we request

I may cancel my video monitoring if this does not change

I actually like the fact that you can't erase the video of arming and disarming for 30 days. If you have children,  they can sneak in and out of the house in the middle of the night and then erase the video. The same is true if someone gets your access code. We had our system turn itself off three times last week. The video confirmed that it was a defective base unit. Simplisafe can only access video that was triggered by an event and not the arming and disarming video. It only takes a 30 second video so I dress accordingly.

Not to mention, you can't be forced to erase a video of home invaders.

I don't mind not being able to erase. All my cameras are outside anyways (porches/doors/garage). I can't imagine why anyone would desire to monitor the inside of their home, especially if you have other people in your home besides just you. There's no telling when your kids will run through naked or your spouse forgot to grab a towel and needs to sprint to the hall closet to grab one. It's just weird to me that people don't think ahead about video privacy issues, y'all do know that any camera that's connected to the internet can get hacked right? I know the goal of the company is to actively make it hard to do but it can still happen. At least if someone hacks mine all they'll see is my garage and mailbox and other "boring" things.

I want the camera on while the system is armed in away mode only (no one home) which is the way the motion detectors work.  This is advertised as allowing faster emergency response if there is a break-in because they can verify it.  It also lets me check a property when no one is there.  I don't want video in any other mode.  I understand capturing the disarming of away mode but not just any state change which it currently does.  That is an odd design choice which then leaves users wanting to delete accidental captures.  Even better, let the user decide through the app what states of the system the camera captures video.  If you are being forced to delete video there seems to be a duress pin that can be set up.  Once activated this could be used to either disable the apps delete feature or do a fake delete to protect the user.  There are better options than capture for 30 days and just wait for deletion.   This just seems like an incomplete feature - like someone said "don't let perfect be the enemy of good enough".

I agree that I should be able to delete any video recording when I want. This is a no brainer and I hope SS makes this fix. For privacy reasons I should absolutely have control to delete any videos. We all know there can be cases of accidental recordings which we would not want on the cloud floating around.
