Keypad batteries die in a week

Have had SS since July, and have gone through tons of AA batteries.  I called and was sent a new Keypad, thinking it was defective.  The results are the same.  Actually a fresh set of batteries didn't last more than five days, and that was after the batteries that it came with also died out in a few days.  What is going on??  The motion detector in the living room seems to activate the keypad (the backlight turns on) when you walk by.  Are there optimum settings for this thing?  I hear they should last anywhere from 6-8 months.  I've used Costco brand, Durecell, Enegizer, all the same results.

There are two possibilities.  1) the keypad is defective and needs to be replaced under warranty, or 2)  you've got gremlins in your house which cause the backlighting to come on a lot (some people  think the flicker of a TV screen does it).  The solution to 2) is to turn on "power saving mode" so the light only comes on when you touch a button.

I just figured it out. You need to go into menu on the keypad. Go to devices. Select keypad. Select power saving option and select yes.

Never mind that didn't work. This system has had so many bugs with the keypad. It randomly sends distress signals now the battery issue. I will go down the rechargeable batteries path.

Batteries and false alarm.  Had system since 2018 and now the batteries drain in a week or 2.  Worse, the alarm triggered this morning at 4 AM (system set to "Home" mode).  Went down and turned off the alarm siren and got a call from SS (good response at least).  But they said the panic button on the keypad was pressed.  We were sleeping. No one pressed the panic button.   Now I don't want to arm the system in fear of it falsely going off again.  Emailed support and waiting response.

^ Don't count on a timely response via email, if at all. Best to call and troubleshoot, and/or ask for a new keypad.

It is possible the panic alarm would be recognized even if the system was in OFF mode.  Like Fire, CO, Water and Temperature sensors..

As sevensiamesecats mentioned, the Panic Button on the Keypad can still trigger an alarm while the system is in Off mode. If your keypad has falsely triggered a panic alarm then please give our Customer Support a call so that we can get it replaced for you!

I have a first gen Simplisafe system.  For 7 years, the keypad batteries lasted over a year.   Starting earlier this year, the keypad started going thru a set of batteries every month.  After 3 sets, I contacted Simplisafe Support and they sent me a new keypad.  Same thing happened with the new one after 3 weeks.  This model has no wifi or motion sensor.  Keys don't light up until you press one.   The only possible explanation could be increased system activity.  Since COVID, I'm now working from home, but it's not like the doors and windows are constantly being opened and closed.  I'm going to try the rechargeable battery route.

I have also noticed the same issue with my Original Simplisafe. The keypad batteries used to last over a year, but now less than a month.

Same problem. Installed a new system and after 5 days the keypad batteries were dead. After 4 sets of batteries in 29 days they sent a new keypad. 5 days later the new one is dead again. Has anybody figured this out at all? I’m on the phone with dispatch every week now because the alarm goes off when we enter the building.

Hi @vicki,

If the issue is occurring after receiving the replacement KeyPad, there is likely severe wireless interference at play that needs to be addressed. It could be another device on the network causing the interference, or dense building material between the KeyPad and the Base Station. This would make it harder for the KeyPad to communicate with the Base Station, and could plausibly drain the battery in the way that you're experiencing.

It might be best to chat with our Support Team again to try and identify any wireless interference on the network. They can be reached with the contact details found here.
