Outdoor Camera Release

I'm getting really antsy waiting for the outdoor cameras that just don't seem to materialize. There was a post in June stating that they were very close to production but nothing yet. They demonstrated the outdoor camera at CES in January 0f 2018. I want to avoid adding a different system to my overall security system but there are over a dozen other vendors that have completely wireless outdoor cameras and I think I'm not going to wait any longer for SS to bring their camera to market.

Any suggestions?

I am very confused and thoroughly disappointed in SimpliSafe's handling of the outdoor cam issue.  Why is it so secretive, and why has it been so difficult to launch when they have saying it's been on its way for years?  I just called support, and asked if the outdoor cam was out yet. The rep said no, the only options are the indoor cam and the video doorbell.  I asked when the outdoor cam is due out, and she said although there is no date, they are working on it.  So then I said I heard there is a rubber casing to use the indoor cam outdoors, and she said yes, they have that.  Why on earth would she neglect to mention that as an option for someone looking for an outdoor camera?

@saleen8927, My guess is they didn't mention it because it's really not that great. Don't know what kind of temperature that camera is rated to anyway. If it goes below freezing who's to say the camera would continue to work. It's a cheap setup to mount a camera but I'm not sure if it's the best thing out there for it,

I too was curious about operating at very cold temperatures and so mounted a plain, unprotected camera in our unheated and uninsulated garage this past fall in the event the motion sensor was ever triggered in the garage.  It was mounted directly to the drywall in a corner of the garage with outside rated Command strips and nothing more.  During the recent "polar vortex" where air temps dropped well below zero, sometimes as low as 15 below zero Fahrenheit outside and subsequently, below zero inside the garage, the SimpliSafe camera continued to function without issues the whole time.   So at least in regards to lower temperatures, the camera passed my initial "cold weather" testing.

I just installed a Simplicam Outdoor kit for my front door camera. It works well and seems to provide adequate protection for the camera (Disclosure, I live in a mild climate area). I recommend it.

Wait!  Simplisafe has exterior cameras.  I was totally unaware of this, and have been wanting to purchase several.

No, SS does not have a outdoor camera.  They are selling a protective sleeve for the current camera to use it outdoors.

Is the protective sleeve available online?

Is the protective sleeve available online?

Yes. Go to https://simplisafe.com/alarm-sensors. I selected the all new SS. The outdoor kit was available in white or black in the 2nd row for $20.

I know there are some who have no issues with SimpliSafe's indoor or doorbell camera, but I have read far too many posts of those with constant problems. I am not sure I would switch to the SimpliSafe outdoor camera until I see how well it works.

I am in the minority in believing that my security cameras should be independent (i.e., a different brand) of the alarm. The argument is with SimpliSafe, they can view recordings, but each day there are numerous new posts about disconnections, etc.

I have multiple cameras (indoor and out) that are not SimpliSafe, and although I have had issues here and there, they have been few, and the cameras have been reliable.

I like that SS can access the internal cameras during an alarm; I wish they worked better (in my case).   A DVR based wired system seems to be the optimal choice for external cameras.  As they are not related to "security" (in the sense they don't set off an alarm) and only indicate the potential for a break-in rather than an actual attempt, I don't care if they are part of my security system, and I find that a wired, DVR based system provides the best functionality AND reliability at a very reasonable price.

So here I am back again. Original posting was in October 2018. Nearly 8 months later and still no outdoor cameras from SimpliSafe. Almost a year and a half since demonstrating the outdoor camera at CES and still no camera. Its frustrating that SS has not responded to the outdoor camera questions. I wish I had gone with RING like my brother. His system works just as well as mine and has completely wireless outdoor cameras.

I just installed an camera with the outdoor kit and I feel as if I have wasted my money. The feed is horrible. The IR emitter on the camera isn't strong enough. Plus with no cover over the lens bugs are hanging out all over it occluding the view. Come on SimpliSafe, give us a real outdoor camera. There is obviously a need for it. Nest has one and it's great. What are they waiting for?

I just installed a camera with an outdoor cover.  The images at night match exactly with what murphmr posted. It's not just a "winter' issue. The images are unusable. Can someone from SimpliSafe please comment on what the technical problem is, please?  Thank you in advance.

The technical problem is that it is an INDOOR camera, which is not designed to work with the temperature and humidity of outdoors.  The "skin" may keep if from destruction by rain, but that's about it.

Just emailed simplisafe about getting outdoor camera. Told them if they don't come out with it by end of year I'm going with another company. Shouldn't they want our Business? Also-- I hate the idea of bouncing between apps. I do have a nest thermostat but everything else in my home is simplisafe. Even nests outdoor cameras aren't wireless. I'll be surprised if simplisafe outdoor cameras aren't wireless. Their whole MO is having a system that's easy to install. I can't imagine wired  cameras are easy to install. Anyway, below is the latest response from simplisafe re: outdoor camera release.

This is getting OLD....

The Simplisafe outdoor camera was shown at CES in January 2018...IT'S NOW AUGUST 2019 and all we get from Simplisafe is " it's in development' "no release date'...19 months of excuses???

I have your system including entry sensors, motion detectors, panic buttons, indoor cameras and the video doorbell, but the absence of outdoor cameras is a huge hole in providing a total solution!

Putting a silicone sleeve on the indoor camera is NOT a solution.

Come on Simplisafe - your video doorbell looks like a Nest Hello with different firmware, and seems to work OK...finish whatever collaborative effort you're cooking up with Ring, Nest, etc. and GET THE OUTDOOR CAMERA LAUNCHED!!!
